Flowco Australia partnered with one of the nation’s largest telecommunications providers to implement a large-scale diesel fuel monitoring solution that ensured environmental compliance and enhanced fuel system visibility across 430 backup generator sites. With operations spanning remote and metropolitan regions, the client required a solution that not only met Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) regulations, but also provided centralised control over its widespread diesel storage assets.
The primary objective was to mitigate environmental risk and avoid costly penalties associated with fuel leaks, equipment failure or non-compliance with underground petroleum storage system (UPSS) regulations. With critical backup generators supporting telecommunications infrastructure during power outages, ensuring reliable fuel availability and safety at each site was a top priority.
Real-Time Fuel System Monitoring Using Automatic Tank Gauging
To bring these sites up to compliance, Flowco supplied and installed advanced automatic tank gauging (ATG) systems across 430 underground diesel tanks. These state-of-the-art monitoring devices continuously track fuel levels, detect water ingress, and provide early warning of potential leaks or system failures.
Each ATG system was connected via wireless telemetry to a cloud-based fuel management platform, enabling the telecommunications provider to monitor fuel inventory, alarms, and site status in real time from a central location. This eliminated the need for manual inspections and created a single source of truth for compliance reporting across the entire network.
The ATG systems were selected for their proven reliability, regulatory compliance features, and seamless integration with enterprise asset management tools. Leak detection capability was particularly important to ensure adherence to strict EPA and state-based fuel storage regulations, including requirements under the Australian Standard AS4897.

Following the success of the underground tank monitoring project, Flowco was re-engaged to expand the program to the client’s aboveground diesel storage assets. Over 4,000 aboveground tanks located at mobile tower sites, data centres, and communications hubs are now being integrated into the same cloud-based monitoring system.
Flowco continues to provide preventative maintenance, software updates, and ongoing technical support, ensuring that both underground and aboveground assets remain compliant, monitored and optimised for performance.
