Many retail fuelling sites in Malaysia often grapple with issues stemming from vent pipe corrosion and fuel vapour leaks. High rainfall and elevated groundwater levels accelerate the deterioration of ageing galvanized iron (GI) vent pipes, creating safety hazards, driving up maintenance costs and threatening unplanned shutdowns of forecourt operations. Recognising the need for a robust solution, Flowco was engaged by a leading Malaysian fuel retailer to undertake a comprehensive program of vent system replacements across multiple sites.
Flowco’s approach involved replacing the corroded GI vent pipes with High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) piping, an industry-proven material selected for its superior chemical resistance and long-term durability, especially in challenging underground environments. This upgrade was complemented by Flowco’s meticulous verification process, which included USEPA certified precision line testing to ensure the integrity of the new HDPE vent systems. This dual-pronged approach not only met regulatory requirements but also significantly reduced operational risks.
The outcomes of the HDPE upgrade were substantial.
- The new piping system eliminated the risk of fuel vapour leaks, greatly improving site safety and environmental protection.
- Maintenance requirements and long-term costs were substantially reduced due to the inherent durability and chemical resistance of HDPE.
- The overall lifespan of the vent system was extended, minimising potential disruptions to site operations.
- The project delivered a future-proof infrastructure solution, ensuring compliance and operational resilience for years to come.
To date, Flowco has successfully completed these HDPE upgrades at hundreds of sites throughout Malaysia. This large-scale initiative has helped our customer safeguard their sites from environmental contamination, protect the integrity of soil and groundwater and ensure safe, compliant and cost-effective fuel system operation.
